1987년에 함께 공부하던 중국 친구가 흥얼 거리며 부르던 이 노래는 카바레에서 춤을 추고 생계를 꾸려가던 한 땐서의 애환을 그려 낸 것입니다.
화려한 의상과 화장으로 단장하고 현란한 춤이 가득한 무대 뒤에서 남 몰래 울다가도 다시 사람들 앞에서 웃고 춤을 춰야 하는 댄서의 삶에 정말 많은 사람들의 공감을 끓어낸 수작입니다 이 당시 저도 출세와 명예, 가족과 학위을 위해서 나의 찐 모습에 눈을 가린채 남의 눈을 위해 가면을 쓰고 무대에 올라 젊은 시절을 태워 버린 안타까운 저의 추억이 있답니다.
인생은 거대한 가면무도회 장이 랍니다.
이제 저는 남의 눈을 위한 가면을 벋어 던지고, 무대 뒤에서 이 댄서를 격려하고 응원하며 참 나의 모습을 찾아가 보려 합니다.
Back in 1987, a Chinese friend of mine, with whom I studied, would often hum this song.
A song that paints the bittersweet tale of a dancer who once made a living swaying under the dim cabaret lights.
Draped in dazzling costumes, adorned with striking makeup, she twirled under the brilliance of the stage. Yet behind the shimmering curtains, she wept in solitude, only to step back into the limelight, smiling, dancing, hiding the weight of her heart. A masterpiece that stirred countless souls, for in her story, many found their own reflections.
Back then, I too, blinded by ambition and honor, chasing school degrees and family expectations, donned a mask, stood upon a stage not my own, and burned away the prime of my youth.
Life is but a grand masquerade ball.
Now, I cast aside the mask worn for the eyes of others, choosing instead to stand behind the curtain, cheering for the dancer, and seeking the truest version of myself.
